It is early November and crush is wrapping up for the year. We have almost all of the red grape lots pressed and to barrel with over half innoculated for ML fermentation. The whites are aging in 100% neutral oak barrels on full lees, with a 2x monthly battonage, or lees stirring.
2009 was a unique vintage for Washington State. Spring bud break was late, with extended cold temps throughout the appellations. Summer brought very warm temperatures, with harvest for us beginning on September 15, a full 2 + weeks earlier than ever before. Harvest started with Syrah from Elephant Mountain and Coyote Canyon, and continued unabated with the cooler site Bordeaux grapes, and the Mourvedre coming in mid to late October.
While too early to tell the finished structure of the wines, 2009 will certainly be a vintage packed with big fruit, and abundant tannins. The warm summer temperatures contributed to thicker skins in the hotter vineyard sites, and developed deep, rich flavors. The Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Mourvedre, and Petit Verdot look to be stars.
