So God made a farmer.
One of my all-time favorite speeches, first given by Paul Harvey in 1978. It’s something that has resonated with me since the first time I heard it. Powerful words of truth. Farming was always something I knew I wanted to do, I just needed to figure out how to make my dream a reality. Tsillan Cellars has given me that opportunity. I truly love what I do, I wake up in the morning excited to go to work. Excited to start another day, helping shape another vintage. My office is 36 acres of wine grapes that overlook spectacular Lake Chelan, I couldn’t imagine a better office view.
This land, the views and vines are all shared with an exceptional vineyard crew. Tsillan Cellars vineyard crew consists of 6 employees. These guys work 6 days a week from mid-February through November. Besides the mower, sprayer and cultivator they do everything by hand. From pruning in late winter all the way till harvest in the fall, they tend to every vine by hand. They meticulously nurture every vine to grow us the highest quality fruit that makes our wine. There hands make precise cuts, thin shoots and drop extra fruit throughout the year. The decisions they make throughout the year, dictate the quality of fruit that is brought into the cellar. Let me tell you what, they are true masters of their craft.
Between the 6 of them they have a combined experience of 49 years growing the grapes. Year after year the quality of grapes they produce help Tsillan Cellars show that the Lake Chelan AVA is producing outstanding fruit that’s being made into wine that is making its mark all across the Washington wine scene. The quality of wine that we just bottled is no exception to that statement. It’s a testament to the hard work and love they have of the land and the grapes they grow.
When I think of the speech, “So god made a farmer,” I think of these guys. Willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done. They persevere through everything mother nature throws at them, and come out the other side singing, smiling and laughing. The love for what they do and joy they show doing it daily is inspiring. Their hard work doesn’t go unnoticed and makes me want to work harder. They are truly inspiring to be around.
I can’t thank them enough for making my transition into the role of vineyard manager as easy as possible. None of this would be possible without them. I appreciate and thank everyone of them for all their hard work and making my job so incredibly fun and rewarding.
Over the course of this growing season, I will be interviewing all of them to bring you a closer look into what a vintage looks like through there eyes. For now, I will just say thanks to the backbone and true farmers of Tsillan Cellars, we couldn’t do the great things we do without all of you! Esta tierra, las vistas y las vides todas son compartidas con un grupo espectacular de trabajadores del viñedo. La cuadrilla consiste de seis empleados. Ahí las manos hacen cortes precisos, despampanan y ralean racimos durante la temporada. Las decisiones que hacen durante el año dictan la calidad de la fruta que llega a la bodega. Son verdaderos maestros.
Entre los seis tienen una experiencia combinada de más de 49 años. Año tras año la calidad de las uvas ayuda a Tsillan Cellars a mostrar que Lake Chelan AVA está produciendo fruta de excelente calidad que se transforma en vino que deja a su vez su marca en el escenario del vino de Washington. La calidad del vino que embotellamos no es excepción. Es un atestado del trabajo duro y el amor que le tienen a la tierra y a las uvas que ahí crecen.
Cuando pienso en el discurso, “So God Made a Farmer” (Entonces Dios Creo a un Agricultor), pienso en ellos. Haciendo lo que sea necesario para llevar a cabo el trabajo. Perseveran a pesar de las dificultades que la madre naturaleza les trae, y salen por el otro lado cantando, sonriendo y riendo. El amor por lo que hacen y la alegría que muestran es inspiradora. Su trabajo arduo no pasa desapercibido y me hace trabajar más duro. Es inspirador trabajar a su lado.
No hacer más que agradecerles por hacer que mi transición a gerente de viñedo haya sido lo más fácil posible. Nada hubiera sido posible sin ellos. Aprecio y agradezco a todos y cada uno de ellos por su trabajo arduo y por hacer que mi trabajo sea increíblemente divertido y gratificante.
